Ghosts, ghouls and goblins alike showed up to support the Lady Sandies defeat the
Tascosa Rebels in three sets. On Tuesday, October 4th the volleyball team faced Tascosa at home with the biggest student section of the season.
“Beating Tascosa was great; it’s really good for us to be sitting undefeated, at the top of the district right now,” Head Coach Mike Moffitt said.
The team worked really hard to prepare for their most competitive match this season in district.
“We really focused on our side of the net, prior to the match,” Moffitt said. “We did some scouting report items as far as just knowing what Tascosa wanted to do but we really tried to stay sharp on our side and do what we do well.”
Team leaders include senior Jo Moffitt with 29 total assists and sophomore Sienna Cavalier with 12 kills and three aces. These stats are not achievable without the whole team’s effort.
“It’s been really fun to watch this team play together,” Moffitt said.
Varsity volleyball knew that in order to have a big student section they needed a theme. They worked hard to put the theme, Halloween costumes, all over social media to convince students to come and support them at the rival game.
“I informed people on both Snapchat and Instagram about the game’s details; I am thrilled with the results,” Senior Elle Krusa said. “It was amazing having a huge student section that was on theme. I think that our students really stepped up the energy in the gym and were a huge part of our win.”
The big student section changed the environment of the game. The team is grateful for the students that cheered them to victory over the Rebels.
“Having such a hype student section helped me come out of my shell more and cheer louder,” Freshman Bennett Rae said. “The energy the students bring to the gym changes the dynamic of our game and makes competing so much more exciting.”
Winning was extra special to Senior Elle Krusa who led in blocks and had seven kills with only one error. This impressive performance happened on her 18th birthday.
“The win was huge for me because Randall is no longer in our district, Tascosa is our biggest opponent,” Krusa said.
After the big win, the team starts to focus on their next steps. Varsity continues to work hard, with the goal of winning district in mind.
“From here we will try to finish out the rest of the way; undefeated in district,” Coach Moffitt said. “And have our third district title in a row then we will be ready to see where the playoffs go.”
