Friday night lights got exciting last week at West Texas Stadium for the anticipated matchup between the Sandstorm and the Rebels. The Sandstorm dominated the game, blowing the Rebels out of the water with the final score 42-6.
This football game is not just any district game. For 65 years, Tascosa and Amarillo High have been bitter rivals. In recent years, Tascosa has dominated these games, winning five years in a row. With a disappointing pre-season record of 1-3, this game is crucial for the Sandies to gain momentum. To the skeptics’ surprise, the Sandstorm crushed the Rebels, finally ending the five year win streak.
“Last year they put it on us so this year it felt great to get back at them,” said senior quarterback Will Flaming. “I played pretty good but the defense did an amazing job.”
The week leading up to the game, known as Spirit Week to students, was surrounded with much anticipation and hype. The amount of pressure did not phase the Sandies.
“We played phenomenal, the offense played great, the defense completely stopped them,” said wide receiver Oliver Parsons. “It was a normal week even with the hype around it but now with the win, we are definitely going to celebrate it.”
Even with a satisfying win, the Sandstorm start preparing for their homecoming game against Caprock.
“We are gonna go through the game plan and get ready for the homecoming game against Caprock,” said Flaming.
