Update: The team clinched the District Championship after their second game to Tascosa. The team continues on with standing of 31-4, a 7-0 in district and a 11 game winning streak.

The basketball season is underway and rankings are looking good for the Lady Sandies as district continues. The team’s current standings consist of 30-4, and 6-0 in district with a 10-game winning streak.
“It’s a fun group to be around,” Jeffery Williams, varsity girl’s basketball coach, said. “Our team’s chemistry is off the charts positive and it’s one of the best groups I’ve had.”
Last year’s season ended in a five-overtime game against Monterey ending their season in the playoffs. The teams finished in the season with a 32-5 overall and 7-1 in district, pushing them to fight harder as this season’s district starts.
“The best recent win we’ve had was against Tascosa because a lot of people think that they can beat us but we came through and won in a close game and it meant a lot,” senior Jada Graves said.
On Jan.16, the team played the rival school, Tascosa. The Lady Sandies started with a 15-point lead but ended up in some foul trouble which allowed the opposing team to get back in the game. With 1:20 left in the game, Tascosa got their first lead, but the girls pulled through and managed to win 50-48.
“I hope we can make it all the way to state, and that we can play as a team all the way [just] being as tough as we have been at the beginning of the season,” junior Bella Edwards said.
With this year’s playoffs about to start, the team’s goal is to win a district championship.
“You know we’re ranked #3 in the state out of like 258 schools or however many 5A schools, so we’ve accomplished some goals already but our big goals are still ahead of us,” Williams said.
