Homecoming season has officially hit, this means it is time to grab some ribbon, a hot glue gun, your crafting skills and start making this year’s mums and garters.
Tools and supplies:
Several rolls of different colored and patterned ribbons in different sizes
Larger Mum backing
6.5 sized Mum flower
Stapler
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Ruler
Stickers, charms or any extras
*garter band
*small backing
*5.5 sized Mum flower
*for the garter
Instructions:
Take three different ribbons then cut each ribbon into eight 4-inch strips. Fold each strip in half and staple the ends together, forming a loop.
After cutting and looping the ribbons, take a large mum backing with one of the lines(shown above) pointing away from you, hot glue one set of lopes half an inch around the edges of the backing following the lines. After covering the edges in your first set of loops, take the second set of loops and hot glue them in between the original set, following the gaps on the backing. If there is still white space on the backing, add another layer of loops, filling in any gaps. Once completed your mum top should look something like this:
Next cut strips of five basic ribbons measured to your hip, thigh or knee length. Glue these ribbons to the bottom end of your second, unused large mum backing. Then, cut out strips of similar varying lengths in different colors, patterns, thickness and sizes. Proceed to glue these down on top of the original basic strips of ribbon to create any pattern or desired look similar to this:
Lastly, hot glue the two separate backings to each other, aligning the holes in the center of the backings. Then on the backing with the ribbon loop border, drizzle hot glue to the remaining white space, then place your flower onto the center, guiding the stem through the holes in the mum backings. Attach a safety pin to the top of the mum, then place it onto your desired surface. The finished product should look like this:
When making a garter, use a small backing and a 5.5in mum flower. Follow the same steps listed above, simply on a smaller scale. Finish the garter by hot gluing an armband to the backing.
