Disney’s Tangled offers an enjoyable animated experience that brings the classic tale of Rapunzel to life. The animations mix romance, adventure and humor, making it a hit for an audience of all ages.
The story revolves around Princess Rapunzel, born with magical golden hair obtained from a flower with special healing powers that could help keep someone alive forever, cure sickness and fix wounds. The queen, who had a life-threatening illness while pregnant, used the flower to heal herself. After the queen drank from the soup with the flower, she gave birth to her healthy baby. The kingdom rejoiced at the birth, but her unique hair soon caught the attention of an evil woman named Mother Gothel.
Disney uses a mix of hand-drawn techniques and computer animation, making a unique modern style that may feel classic to some. These scenes feature vibrant colors and rich detail that capture the warmth of a “fairy-tale kingdom.”
The film’s soundtrack, composed by Alan Menken with lyrics by Glen Slater, includes catchy songs that help the movie plot. The scene during “I See The Light” includes Rapuzel and Flynn lifting floating lanterns into the air. This had been a dream of Rapunzel’s, and without her knowledge, the way her kingdom celebrated her birthday and signaled for her to come home. More songs such as, “When Will My Life Begin”, exemplify a want for freedom from Mother Gothel’s suppressive and manipulative hand. Each piece used throughout the movie not only improves the narrative but also connects Tangled as a modern Disney Musical classic.
The romance used throughout the movie represents one any woman may dream of, one built in trust, respect and emotional growth. Flynn Rider and Rapunzel start off as complete opposites and strangers not knowing anything about one another. Until their journey allows them to see how much they appreciate each other and the strengths that each of them bring into the relationship. Flynn never tries to put a stop to Rapunzel’s ambitions, instead he encourages her to live out her dreams, and supports her independence. Rapunzel helps Flynn discover his own self, inspiring him to let go of the selfish nature and show honesty and love to others. Their relationship is not about control, but partnership, both of them grow stronger together. The gentle development from humor and playfulness to deep emotional connection makes their romance feel genuine. The love that both of these characters portray demonstrates what every love should look and feel like. Everyone should want a love that both of the characters portray, you should never settle for less.
