Ghost Town, a 2008 comedy, stars Ricky Gervais (Invention of Lying, Night at the Museum), Téa Leoni (Madam Secretary, Family Man) and Greg Kinnear (Last Song, Heaven is for Real).
This movie portrays Bertrum Pincus (Gervais), a snobby dentist lacking in social skills. Pincus, content with his meticulous and isolated life, goes in for a surgery. While under anesthesia, Pincus dies for seven minutes. The doctors bring him back, but once he goes home from the hospital, he discovers the ability to see ghosts. These ghosts have “unfinished business” that they want Pincus to help them resolve. One ghost in particular, a dead Frank Herlihy (Kinnear), tries to convince Pincus to make his widow, Gwen (Leoni), break up with a dishonest lawyer. Pincus agrees, with the motive to get the needy ghosts off his back. Against his own will, Pincus finds himself falling for Gwen and tries to change himself to become the man she deserves.
I watched this movie for the first time after my parents recommended it for a movie night and have rewatched it at least four times since. Ghost Town is a classic movie that one could go back to repeatedly because of the feel-good, funny vibe that compliments well to the subtle romantic plot. Spot-on acting helps every actor fit their character with ease so that the audience becomes absorbed into the storyline. Overall, a great movie to watch for a good laugh or a chill movie night.
I would improve the language and suggestive dialogue in this film. The movie uses the inappropriate comments for comedic purposes, but they did not contribute a significant amount to the humor of the movie, so I think it could really do without it to make it appropriate for families.
Overall, I would give this movie a 9 out of 10 and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good comedy.
