The Sandie tennis teams won the District Championship on Tuesday, September 30, against the Tascosa Rebels.
To prepare for these matches, the team practiced every day and worked extra hard to prepare for the rival matchup that would determine the district champion.
“We practiced two hours a day as a team and even some of us did privates to prepare more for this match and playoffs,” junior Sara Shelhamer said.
Coach Cody Crouch, who replaced Coach Otto after he retired, takes pride in his team’s hard work and continued dedication as they head into the playoffs.
“It felt really good. I am new to Amarillo High and new to this rivalry. This match made me feel immense pride in these kids—not only for winning on the court, but also for being incredible teammates and great people off the court.” Crouch said.
He not only takes pride in the championship but also in the players who showcased focused performance.
“Going back to our previous five matches, this one helped us to focus back in and get prepared for the playoffs,” Crouch said. “We played a difficult preseason schedule, but we haven’t faced a state-ranked opponent since August 23rd. Our first round of the playoffs will be against the 25th-ranked team in the state, the same team that beat Tascosa earlier in the season. I expect some of our playoff matches to have great atmospheres, and this match helped us prepare for more than just what happens inside the fence.”
