The final frame fell silent, but the impact echoed across the entire alley as the AHS bowling team locked in a second-place finish at the state tournament. Pins crashed, teammates erupted and months of practice and relentless focus paid off in a moment that felt bigger than the scoreboard.
Competing against the top teams in the state, the bowlers delivered under pressure, proving that consistency, teamwork and determination can carry a team all the way to the podium. The team battled on the biggest stage in Texas and came up just four pins short of a state championship, finishing as the Texas State Runner-Up.
“Making it to state was more of an expectation for us as a team after making it the year before,” sophomore Tripp Campball said. “However, going into the season I didn’t know what to expect for singles. It was still exciting winning regionals as a team and as an individual to make it to state.”
The news of being able to advance to State did not come as a surprise to the team, having already made it the year before. However, this year they performed even better than they did before, earning them second place rather than the fifth place spot they secured last year.
“It was pretty cool since I went as a freshman and we got fifth,” sophomore Austin Gonce said.
Participating as a member of the bowling team did not only allow players to play a sport but also to connect with teammates and make new friends. It served as a sense of connection between people who otherwise might now be friends today as well as provide team members with a fun past time and something to work toward and have passion for.
“Being on the bowling team gave me something to look forward to after school two of the five days a week, whether it be a match or practice,” Tripp said.
This year, the bowling team will say goodbye to their only senior of the year, AJ Felder. AJ held important role on the team ever since he first joined, and now he has played an important role in both getting his team the state and helping them secure second place. Soon, he will say goodbye to the team, but the impact he has had on the bowling team and the impact bowling had on him will remain.
“I’ll stick around for the rest of my life,” Felder said. “I’m definitely not planning on quitting after this.”
The entire team put a lot of work towards advancing to Region and State Competition. Each member put in hours of practice and effort into honing their skilling and working towards improvement and success, both as a team and as individuals. Even with the loss, they had managed to hold first place title until the very end, which proves how hard the team worked and how much the sport as a whole matters to them. Lots of effort had gone into the games played and moves made in order to advance to state, which ultimately sent them home with silver and lots of memories made.
