The Lady Sandies varsity soccer team took the 2021 season to the next level after advancing to Regional Finals for the first time in Sandie history
“It’s definitely a rush to hold that gold ball in your hand,” senior Abigail Rodriguez said. “Winning the Regional Semi-Finals and holding that representation of us making history was euphoric.”
Prior to the teams final match, the girls won the district championship, bi-district against Lubbock Cooper, Area against El Paso Bel Aire, Regional Quarter Finals against Lubbock Coronado, Regional Semi-Finals against Burleson Centinnial before facing off against Grapevine at the Regional Finals. The girls’ season wrapped up with a loss against the Grapevine Mustangs (1-3) on April 9th.
Aside from a preseason loss to Coronado, the almost perfect district season set the tone for the girls’ determination to dominate the season.
“All four years, it has been a goal of ours to try and advance in the playoffs and win gold ball trophies,” senior Ciana Carlon said. “Winning multiple trophies this year shows the level of commitment and hard work we accomplished as a team.”
They committed to playing their best, which reflected in their hard work during the district and playoffs.
“Although we did make history and we are so accomplished and proud of our recent season, we weren’t ready for it to be over and we had more to give,” junior Makenlie Hooks said.
The team worked hard all year and became a great example of how far hard work and determination can take student athletes.
“The program has given me a second family where I can depend on my teammates both in and out of school,” Rodriguez said.
