Smoke flies as the aroma of barbecue spreads through the air. Any barbeque imaginable the Sandies can make, including chicken, ribs, brisket and dessert.
The Sandie BBQ Teams had a successful weekend at the AmTech Regional HSBBQ Cook-off. The senior team, Route66 Smoke, placed 8th and the freshman team, Smokin’ Storm, was right behind placing 9th overall. Both teams qualified for state competition in May. The program was created to give kids structure and guide them toward their future.
“The mission of the organization is to enrich the lives of our students through BBQ education, cook-off competitions and character development,” culinary teacher Rhonda Obenhaus said. “We establish strict guidelines and academic standards that will allow our student cooks to excel in the classroom and in their community.”
Over 50 excited judges from the community came out to help and be a part of community involvement.
“One local doctor even volunteered to judge at the state cook-off in May,” Obenhaus said. “AISD is making a blazing trail across the state in culinary and BBQ!”
Both teams express their excitement to move on to the regional cook-off. If they perform well at this competition they will receive scholarships and the opportunity to bring more people to BBQ.
“Our goal now is to place in the top three overall in a regional cook-off to earn scholarships for the team,” Obenhaus said. “Escoffier Culinary Arts School offers generous scholarships to members placing in the top three at each regional cook-off.”
