The Lady Sandies took on the Lubbock Cooper Pirates in an exciting non-district volleyball game on Tuesday, Oct. 17. Things did not look great for the Sandies in the first set, but they fought back and ended up winning, 20-25, 25-17,25-22, 25-16.
This game had a very eventful back-story due to Cooper being responsible for putting the Sandies out of playoffs last year, so the team played their hardest in order to prove themselves and get revenge.
“This was a great win for us,” Head Coach Mike Moffitt said. “Cooper is the team that knocked us out of the playoffs last year, so it was important to this year’s group to beat them.”
Some key players in this match include senior twins Ryan and Blair Pennington; Blair with 49 assists, and Ryan with 16 kills. Other leaders include junior Bird Moffitt averaging 13 digs and two aces, and junior Sienna Cavalier who ended with 16 kills and nine digs.
“This was a major confidence boost,” Blair Pennington said. “We were very disappointed last year losing to Lubbock Cooper in playoffs and we were all extremely thankful to be able to redeem ourselves.”
After this win the team will begin to prepare for the rest of their season, including finishing district and heading into the playoffs.
“We still play Tascosa at home this weekend, and if we win that one, we will have our fourth straight district title,” Head Coach Moffitt said. “From there, we have one more district match at Plainview, then it is on to the playoffs where we hope to make a long run.”
