The Sandstorm football team faced the San Angelo Central Bobcats with a score of 48-45 underneath the Friday night lights.
The game started off slow for the Sandies after defense allowed two passing touchdowns in the first quarter.
“I feel like we started out not as well,” Senior Nash Dunnam said. “We ended up going pretty well and just fell off at the end but we still came out with the win.”
The tide of the game turned when quarterback Jett Lopez scored a touchdown and defensive back Jaylend Brashears gained the team several interceptions.
“The defense made some plays,” wide receiver Oliver Parsons said. “Those picks allowed the offense to get back onto the field.”
The Bobcats attacked the Sandstorms on offense and defense by attempting three onside kicks, but the Sandstorm managed to successfully ground them. The team effectively minimized turnovers and gave the offense crucial playdrives.
“I was proud of my guys, we had to recover three onside kicks to get out of this thing in one piece,” Special Teams Coach Sam Smeaton said.
With another win in the books, the Sandies look forward to the rest of the season.
“I mean this really was our week one, we learned where our strengths are and we learned what we need to work at,” Smeaton said.
