On September 13, the Sandstorm football team faced Midland High in an exciting game. The Sandies attempted to keep their winning streak alive, but fell short against Midland allowing the opposing team to win 49-42.
The Sandies started off hot with a score of 21-7 thanks to quarterback Jett Lopez throwing a touchdown pass to wide receiver Oliver Parsons during the second quarter.
“My favorite play was this trick play that the offense scored on when we threw it back to Oliver,” defensive lineman coach Rodrick Watkins said.
Midland High responded to the play with running back Elijah McCoy rushing for 229 yards and three touchdowns, and quarterback Stroman Bridges rushing for three touchdowns as well, resulting in 42 unanswered points to give them a 49-21 lead.
“Defensively, I just like the way we didn’t give up,” Watkins said. “We had our backs against the wall, but our guys continued to fight through all of the blood, sweat, and tears.”
Despite the loss, the Sandies look forward to their highly anticipated week four game against the Palo Duro Dons.
“We will look at the video, see things that you can grow from, that you can learn from,” corners coach Andrew Murja said. “We will adjust, move on, and be a better team from here.”
