At school, the store and especially online, people have started sporting staples such as henleys, baby doll tops and low rise jeans. Accessories from the era have also returned including Ugg’s and slouchy bags. The early 2000’s fashion, once tucked away in a box has returned.
Social media was the main contributor to this fashion comeback. Creators would show the thrifted 2000’s staples they got their hands on. Students scrolling through TikTok saw the cute and nostalgic outfits, encouraged to hunt down similar finds.
“After seeing fashion trends on Tik Tok, I bought a pair of low-rise jeans and a baby tee. I bought it because I saw my favorite influencer styling it, and I thought it would be cute to try,” sophomore Madison Silva said.
While thrifting gave the trend a push, brands such as Abercrombie and Hollister revived the look that previously filled their stores. Both brands brought back and updated their tops, making them with more comfortable material and adding new colors. The updates and accessibility make it a better option than thrifting.
“I specifically shop for tops from Hollister because I always have better luck finding cute ones there than thrifting. While I do enjoy thrifting my jeans, for tops Hollister has better quality and on trend designs,” said sophomore Lily Lafuente.
Popular 2000’s TV shows with heavy emphasis on fashion also paved the way for this fashion comeback with the characters providing lots of inspiration for people today. Some notable shows include The Vampire Diaries, particularly the main character Elena Gilbert, Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girls.
“Elena Gilbert from The Vampire Diaries inspired my fashion mainly because people tell me I look like her, but I personally also love the style and aesthetic of the outfits. I feel like it really matches with me,” sophomore Emilee Casas said.
