“The Iron Claw,” released in theaters on December 22, 2023. The biopic, produced by A24, started production in June the year prior. Research for the film began in 2015 by director Sean Durkin, a professional wrestling fan in his youth.
“The Iron Claw” follows the timeline of the Von Eric dynasty’s professional wrestling journey and the tragedies of the siblings passing away soon after. The film reveals how the dad, Fritz Von Eric, wanted his six kids to become the best athletes and world heavyweight champions because he never could. The biopic depicts the tragic drug use back then, especially within the pro wrestling business. Speaking of pro wrestling, the choreography of the matches are spot on and makes you feel like you are back in the 80’s. Zac Effron as Kevin Von Erich and Jeremey Allen White as Kerry Von Erich have done training before filming with Wrestling Legend, Chovo Guerrero, who plays “The Sheik”. The movie shows how hard he has worked for his role. The movie had cameos from real pro wrestlers like Nick Nemeth as Gino Hernandez and MJF as Lance Von Erich. The movie grossed 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and made over $45.2 million worldwide.
This is one of my favorite movies to watch and highly recommend to anyone, even non-wrestling fans. The actors play phenomenal roles, and the ring work seemed really good. The way the emotions of the story flows amazingly. From Kerry winning gold to Kevin losing his brothers one by one, the movie really knows how to play with your emotions and make you feel as if you are a part of the Von Erichs. This is one of my favorite biopics of all time, and I highly recommend this movie.
